Older Houses, More Roof to Think About

A good share of Ridgewood's houses were built long before modern underlayments existed. Victorians with turrets and wraparound porches, gambrel-roofed Dutch colonials and steep Tudors sit alongside later center-hall colonials, and each style puts its weak points in a different place. A roof here is rarely one simple plane, so the details at the valleys, dormers and porch tie-ins matter as much as the shingle you choose.

Our approach is to find out what the house already has before recommending anything. Some roofs still have original slate worth keeping, some have built-in box gutters hidden behind the trim, and some have been reroofed so many times that the original details are long gone. We photograph what we see, explain which parts are original, and quote repairs that fit the house rather than a one-size-fits-all replacement.

When a full replacement does make sense, we plan it around the house: protecting plantings and porches, staging materials so trim isn't damaged, and flashing chimneys and dormer cheeks properly instead of relying on sealant. You get a written scope that lists every one of those items.

Roofing Services in Ridgewood

The work we're asked to do in Ridgewood leans toward older-home detail. These pages explain each service in depth.

Slate Roof Repair

Cracked or slipped slates replaced with matching stone, copper slate hooks where appropriate, and worn valley and ridge flashing renewed so a sound slate roof can keep going.

Roof Replacement

Full tear-off with new decking where needed, ice-and-water shield in every valley and along the eaves, and GAF architectural or designer shingles chosen to suit the style of the house.

Gutters

Seamless aluminum or copper gutters, relining or replacement of built-in box gutters, and downspouts routed so water clears porches and foundations.

Chimney

New step and counterflashing, repointing of loose mortar joints, crowns and caps, and crickets behind wide chimneys on steep roofs.

Soffit & Fascia

Rotted rafter tails, fascia and soffit boards repaired or replaced, with attention to keeping the profile and overhang that give an older house its look.

Roof Repair

Targeted fixes for leaking valleys, dormer walls, skylights and porch roofs, with photos of the problem and the finished repair.

Where Ridgewood Roofs Tend to Leak

Older, more complicated roofs develop a familiar set of problems. If your house has any of the features below, they're worth checking before the next heavy rain.

  • Box gutters built into the eaves. Some older homes have gutters built into the roof edge and lined with metal. When that lining cracks or the seams open, water runs straight into the cornice and wall framing, often without any obvious drip outside. Relining or converting them is a common fix.
  • Gambrel and multi-gable valleys. Dutch colonial gambrels and Victorians with several intersecting gables send a lot of water through a few valleys. Worn valley metal or shingles cut too short in a valley are frequent leak sources.
  • Turrets, towers and curved sections. Round or conical roof sections can't be covered like a flat plane. They need small-format material or metal and careful flashing where they meet the main roof.
  • Porch roofs tied into the main wall. Wraparound and front porches usually have a low pitch and a long joint against the house. Missing or rusted flashing there lets water into the wall below the second-floor windows.
  • Mature trees over the roof. Large shade trees drop leaves and seed pods that clog valleys and gutters and keep north-facing slopes damp, which encourages moss and shortens shingle life.
Ridgewood FAQ

Questions from Ridgewood Homeowners

My Ridgewood house still has its original slate. Do I have to replace it?
Not necessarily. Good slate can outlast several asphalt roofs, and often the failures are in the flashing, nails or a handful of broken pieces. We assess whether the stone itself is sound and give you a slate repair option before discussing replacement.
Can you keep the look of an older house when the roof is replaced?
Yes. We go over shingle profiles and colors with you, preserve trim and overhangs, and can use copper for flashing or gutters where you want it. Designer shingles and composite slate are also options for homes where a standard architectural shingle would look out of place.
Are there special approvals for roofing work in Ridgewood?
Requirements depend on the property and the scope. We check with the Village of Ridgewood building department before work begins and handle the required paperwork.
Is the work covered by a warranty?
Every job carries our 10-year workmanship warranty, and GAF systems come with manufacturer coverage as well. The details are on our warranties page.
