Roofing That Respects Morristown's Older Homes
Morristown has a deep stock of older houses, Colonials and Victorians among them, many standing on the blocks near the Green and downtown. Farther out you'll find mid-century homes and newer construction. The older roofs often carry slate, copper details or steep, multi-gabled designs that don't forgive careless work.
Our first job on any roof here is figuring out what's worth saving. A slate roof with a handful of broken pieces and tired flashing usually needs a repair, not a tear-off. A shingle roof with soft decking and no real ventilation is a different story. We document what we find with photos and give you a written estimate that explains the recommendation.
If your home is in a historic district, or you think the town may want to review the work, tell us at the start. We check with the Morristown construction office before anything begins and choose materials and colors with that in mind.
Roofing Services in Morristown
These are the services that fit Morristown's housing best. Each links to a page with more on materials and process.
Slate Roof Repair
Replacing cracked and slipped slates, renewing worn flashing, and keeping a sound slate roof in service instead of replacing it early.
Roof Replacement
When a roof is finished, we strip it to the deck, repair the sheathing and install a GAF system with ice-and-water shield and proper ventilation. Designer shingles are an option if you want a slate or shake look.
Roof Repair
Leaks at dormers, skylights, valleys and wall step flashing, on older Colonials and newer homes alike.
Chimney
Re-flashing, crowns, repointing and crickets for wide chimneys that trap water and debris on their uphill side.
Gutters
Seamless gutters sized for long, steep roof runs, plus repairs along the gutter line where the wood behind it has started to rot.
Soffit & Fascia
Rotted fascia boards replaced and vented soffit added, which helps the attic breathe and stops the decay that overflowing gutters leave behind.
Common Roof Problems on Morristown Homes
Older houses and steep roofs bring their own set of problems. Here's what we look for first.
- Sound slate, failing flashing. Slate itself can last a very long time, but the metal around it usually gives out first. Valleys, chimney flashing and ridge details are where many slate roofs leak, and fixing them doesn't require a new roof.
- Old patches on slate. Tar smeared over a cracked slate, or asphalt shingles tucked in as replacements, trap water and make the next repair harder. We remove them and set matching slate where we can source it.
- Ice dams on cold, steep roofs. Older homes often have thin insulation and almost no attic ventilation. Snow melts, refreezes at the eaves and backs water under the roof. On every replacement we address ventilation and run ice-and-water shield along the eaves.
- Wide chimneys without crickets. A broad chimney on the slope catches snow and leaves on its uphill side. Without a cricket to split the flow, the flashing there is under constant stress.
- Hidden rot behind gutters. Where gutters have overflowed for years, the fascia and rafter tails behind them decay quietly. We check that wood before hanging anything new on it.
