Quick Answer

Document damage with photos, call your insurance carrier within 30 days, request a licensed adjuster inspection, and have a licensed NJ contractor (like us) provide a written repair estimate. Keep records of everything — most NJ storm claims are paid within 30–90 days.

Covered vs. Not Covered

  • Covered: wind, hail, fallen trees, fire, vandalism, sudden events
  • Not covered: normal wear, age-related failure, neglect
  • Claim deadline: typically 1 year from date of loss
  • Average NJ storm claim: $10,000–$45,000
  • Most claims pay out 30–90 days after filing

Step 1: Document everything immediately

As soon as it is safe, take dated photos and video of damage from the ground and inside your attic. Capture the storm's conditions (weather-app screenshots, news reports). Save damaged shingles, tree branches, or hail samples.

Step 2: Call your insurance company

Most carriers ask you to file within 30 days of the event. Be factual — describe the storm, date, and visible damage. Get a claim number.

Step 3: Get a professional roof inspection

Call us. We will perform a free drone inspection and provide a written, itemized damage report with photos — the format NJ adjusters accept.

Step 4: Meet the adjuster on site (ideally with your contractor)

Adjusters spend 15–30 minutes on a roof. Having your contractor present ensures all damage is documented — not just what the adjuster sees in a quick walk-around.

Step 5: Review the scope of work

Your adjuster will send a scope with line items. Compare to the contractor estimate. If the adjuster missed items, request a supplement (revision) with documentation.

Step 6: Sign the contract and begin repair

Once insurance approves the scope, sign with your contractor. Many NJ policies pay in two installments: an ACV (actual cash value) payment upfront, and the depreciation balance once work is complete and receipts are submitted.

Common NJ Claim Denial Reasons

  • Damage deemed pre-existing (why you need dated photos)
  • Lack of proof of storm (document weather)
  • Wear and tear (not a covered peril)
  • Policy exclusions (cosmetic hail, cooling device damage)
