Careful Work on Leonia's Older Houses

Leonia feels like an older town that has held on to its houses: Tudors with steep front gables, Dutch colonials with gambrel roofs, center-hall colonials and stucco homes on tree-lined streets. Many still have original slate and tall brick chimneys, and they deserve a roofer who will preserve that character rather than reach straight for a tear-off.

Steep, complicated roofs take more planning than a simple gable. We set up proper fall protection, cover gardens and walkways below, and work through dormers and intersecting roof planes one section at a time. Our Tudor steep-pitch project in neighboring Teaneck shows what that looks like on a 12/12 roof with multiple dormers.

Being based in Edgewater puts Leonia close to home for us, which helps when you need someone to come back and look at a slipped slate or a small drip. And if the slate on your house is still sound, slate roof repair is worth pricing before anyone talks you into a full replacement.

Roofing Services in Leonia

These are the services that fit Leonia's housing best. Each links to its own page.

Slate Roof Repair

Replacing broken or slipped slates, rebuilding valleys, and re-flashing chimneys and dormers on older slate roofs, with replacement stone matched in size and color as closely as we can source it.

Roof Replacement

When a shingle roof is finished, a full tear-off with new underlayment, ice-and-water shield and ventilation, using GAF shingles chosen to suit the house, including designer styles that work on Tudors.

Roof Repair

Leaks at dormer sidewalls, valleys, skylights and vent pipes, and shingles damaged by branches, repaired so they blend in with the existing roof.

Chimney

Step and counter flashing, crickets behind wide chimneys, repointing, and new crowns and caps for the tall brick chimneys common on older homes.

Gutters

Seamless gutters and leaf protection where large trees hang over the house, with downspouts sized for the volume of water a steep roof sends down.

Soffit & Fascia

Rotted fascia and soffit boards replaced after years of gutter overflow, with vented soffit added to improve attic airflow.

Typical Problems on Leonia Roofs

The older and steeper the roof, the more its weak spots hide in the details.

  • Gambrel transitions. On Dutch colonials, the break where the steep lower slope meets the shallower upper slope is a weak point. Shingles laid there without the right underlayment let water in during heavy, wind-driven rain.
  • Steep valleys and dormers. Steep roofs move water quickly, and valleys and dormer sidewalls carry most of it. Worn valley metal or missing step flashing shows up as stains on upstairs walls and ceilings.
  • Failing slate nails. Slate often outlives the nails holding it. When those nails rust through, pieces slide out of place even though the stone itself is still good.
  • Chimney leaks. Tall chimneys catch wind-driven rain and need a cricket behind them, solid counter flashing and a sound crown. When any one of those fails, it can look exactly like a roof leak.
  • Shade and leaf load. Big trees keep roofs damp and fill gutters and valleys, which leads to moss, overflowing gutters and rot along the eaves.
Leonia FAQ

Questions from Leonia Homeowners

How long can a slate roof on an older Leonia home last?
Good slate can last a very long time when the flashing and fasteners are kept up, though it varies with the type of stone and how the roof was installed. Often it's the metal and the nails that need attention rather than the slate itself. An inspection tells you how much life is left.
My Tudor's roof is very steep. Does that change the job?
Yes. Steep pitches need more safety setup and more time, and the details at dormers and valleys take extra care. We account for that honestly in the written quote so there are no surprises later.
Do I need approval before replacing my roof in Leonia?
It depends on the work and the property. Our team contacts the Leonia building department ahead of the job to confirm what applies, and we prepare and submit the necessary forms.
Do you handle roof emergencies in Leonia?
Yes, around the clock. We tarp or temporarily seal the roof to stop water coming in, and come back for the lasting fix when the roof is dry enough to work on.
