Victorian Slate Roof — DaVinci Composite Replacement

The Project

This Montclair Victorian still wore its original 100-year-old natural slate — beautiful, irreplaceable in spirit, and at the end of its serviceable life. Multiple slates had slid from the south face during the last hard winter; the underlying decking and slate-spike substrate were sound but losing fasteners. A full natural-slate replacement would have run $80,000+ and required a specialty crew.

The owners didn't want to lose the look. We presented DaVinci Bellaforté Slate in a custom blend matching the original gray-purple hue. DaVinci composite slate carries a 50-year limited warranty, costs roughly half of natural slate, weighs a fraction of the original load, and reads convincingly as slate from the street and from the property's tree-line approach.

Eight working days, full historic-detail preservation (ridge profile, dormer flashing, copper valley liners), and a roof that is now warranted out to 2076.

• Careful tear-off and disposal of original slate
