Are Gutter Guards Worth It in NJ?

What Drives Gutter Installation Cost in NJ
Two houses of the same size can get very different gutter quotes. The price per linear foot is only the starting point. These factors move the final number:
- Linear feet. The total length of roof edge that needs gutter is the biggest factor. Wings, dormers, porches and a detached garage add footage quickly.
- Stories and access. A ranch is faster and safer to work on than a three-story colonial. Steep slopes, tight side yards, decks and landscaping under the roof line add setup time.
- Downspout count. Each downspout adds material and labor, and taller homes need longer runs.
- Gutter size. 6" gutters cost more than 5" but carry more water. See the section above on when 6" makes sense.
- Material. Aluminum is the most common choice for NJ homes because it does not rust. Copper costs much more and is often chosen for historic homes. Steel is strong but can rust if its coating wears through.
- Seamless vs. sectional. Seamless gutters are formed to the exact length of each run, with no joints along the length. Sectional gutters cost less up front, but every joint is a future leak point.
- Removing old gutters. Taking down and hauling away the old system is usually part of a replacement quote.

- Gutter guards. Guards raise the project cost but cut down on cleaning. The product you choose matters.
Signs You Need New Gutters
Many gutter problems can be repaired. When you see several of these at once, replacement is usually the better choice:
- Leaking seams. Drips at sectional joints get worse each year, and sealant only holds for a short time.
- Rust, cracks or holes. Corroded or split metal cannot be patched for long.
- Sagging. Gutters that tip forward or hang loose are no longer draining properly.
- Standing water. Water sitting in the gutter after a storm means the pitch is wrong.
- Overflow in normal rain. If clean gutters still spill over, they may be too small for the roof.
- Damage below. Stained siding, washed-out mulch beds and a wet basement can all trace back to failing gutters.
What a Gutter Quote Should Include
When you compare quotes, make sure each covers the same scope. A low number can mean something was left out. A complete written estimate should list:
- Total linear feet. Measured footage for gutters and downspouts.
- Size, material and color. For example, 6" seamless aluminum in white.
- Downspouts. How many, where they go, and any extensions.
- Hangers. The type of hanger and how far apart they are spaced.
- Removal and disposal. Whether hauling away the old gutters is included.
- Fascia repair terms. How rotted wood will be handled if it is found.
- Guards, if requested. The specific product as its own line item.
